Onion planting in 2020
Planting onions in 2020 at the optimum time is a very responsible matter, because the quality and quantity of the harvest of this juicy and healthy vegetable depends on it. According to the advice of seasoned ones, a planting calendar for sowing and planting any cultivated plant should be made taking into account several factors: the characteristics of the plant itself and its varieties; climatic conditions of a certain region of the country; according to the lunar calendar.
When to plant onions, taking into account the specifics of plant varieties and climatic characteristics of the regions of Russia
The following types of onions are mainly grown in home gardens of Russia:
There is also almost a year-round practice of sowing onions on greens.
Of course, in different regions of a huge country, the timing of planting onions in the ground or in greenhouses varies significantly. It depends on the specific varieties of this plant.
So, the onion-batun is characterized by high frost resistance, usually does not freeze in severe winters. It is cultivated even in Siberia, beyond the Arctic Circle. Sow onion is only sown on fertile land, as it consumes a lot of mineral salts from the soil.
Onion-batun is propagated by dividing adult plants (parts of the bush, consisting of 3 to 5 plants, are planted in the summer after flowering and collecting seeds from plants), by seedlings or by sowing seeds directly into the ground. Onion propagated by division gives the crop for the next year. Seeds are sown in a greenhouse in early spring (in March). Plants begin to yield in the second year.
When seeds are planted in the soil, they are sown early in spring (in March) or in summer (in June - July). In the latter case, the crop is received only in the second year after sowing. Dry or wetted seeds are sown to a depth of 1.5 - 2 cm. Sowing is lowercase, the distance between the lines is 25 - 30 cm.
Parts of the bush after division are also planted in rows in a row (the distance between rows is 40 cm, between plants - 25 - 30 cm). Before planting, the holes are abundantly watered and parts of the bush are placed in them at the same level at which they were before they were dug. Plants fall asleep in moist soil and slightly compress.
How to plant leek
Leek is a cold-resistant, very demanding plant for fertility and soil moisture. In mild winters with a large snow cover, he successfully winters in the beds. To obtain high yields, it is cultivated on fertile and well-moistened lands. Propagated by seedlings, but can be grown from seeds.
To obtain high-quality seedlings of leek, sowing is started early - March 10 - 20. Dry seeds germinate slowly (12-18 days), so they are presoaked and germinated in advance. To do this, the seeds are kept in water at room temperature for a day. Then they are placed in a damp cloth. Sowing is carried out evenly (randomly) or in rows with a distance between seeds of 4-5 cm to a depth of 1 cm. The soil in the box is slightly watered, covered with foil and put the box on the windowsill. With the advent of seedlings for a week, the temperature is reduced to 15-17 ° C during the day and to 12 ° C at night. In the process of growth, plants are watered and fed with a solution of mineral fertilizers (for 1 liter of water - 3 g of ammonium nitrate, double superphosphate and potassium chloride).
In early May, before planting in open ground, seedlings are watered and carefully removed. Leaves and roots are cut about 1/3 of their length. It is useful to dip the roots into a mash of clay and mullein. In the Moscow region and in the Leningrad region, leeks are often cultivated using 50-60 day old seedlings.
Seedlings are planted in early - mid-May. When planting, the soil around the roots is pressed tightly and lightly watered. The depth of planting onion seedlings is 1 - 1.5 cm. Plants are placed at a distance of 30 cm between rows and 15 - 20 cm between plants in a row. The surface of the soil is mulched with humus or peat.
How to plant onions
There are several ways to grow onions: planting seeds, sampling, seedlings, sowing seeds in the ground.
Sevocs are small bulbs with a diameter of up to 3 cm, which are grown from seeds and are intended for planting. Samples - planting material with a diameter of up to 3.5 cm, obtained from planting a seed set or from onions of older generations. Turnip - marketable bulbs with a diameter of over 3.5 cm.
A small plot (1.5–2 m2) is needed for growing seedlings, but the soil must be carefully prepared. Sevoc is grown after early potatoes, cucumbers and early cabbage. In autumn, the site is dug up and humus or compost is added for digging, 1 to 2 buckets per 1 m2 (if insufficient organic fertilizers were applied under the predecessor).
The seeds are soaked before sowing for 2 to 3 days in clean water and 8 to 16 hours in a 0.1% aqueous solution of potassium permanganate (1 g / l).
Black onions are sown earlier than other crops. Seeds are sown with multi-line ribbons. The distance between the rows in the tape is 10-15 cm. The seed sowing rate is 10 g / m2, the seeding depth is 1-1.5 cm. Sowing rows are sprinkled with humus or compost to maintain moisture in the soil and prevent crust formation.
Onion shoots grow slowly. So that weeds do not drown them, regular weeding is necessary. At the beginning of emergence, if there is no precipitation; it is necessary to carry out 2 - 3 irrigation in 5 - 7 days.
To obtain onion turnip from seeds, early-ripening varieties are used (Strigunovsky, annual Gribovsky, Danilovsky 30). Pre-soaked and partially bent seeds are sown early, as well as sowing, but the distance between the rows is increased to 18 - 20 cm.
Thick seedlings are thinned out several times, using torn young plants as greens for food, then break through the plants that begin to form the bulb (green onion with a young head). From the remaining plants, normal bulbs are formed by autumn, after careful drying they are suitable for long-term storage.
Seedlings are grown in Yalta, Kaba, Krasnodar and others. On fertile soil and in conditions of artificial irrigation, onions of these varieties give a high yield, but are not suitable for long-term storage. Seedlings are planted in the first decade of May. When planting, the roots of the plants are shortened to 3-4 cm, then dipped in a mash of clay and mullein. Seedlings are planted in grooves cut to a depth of 5 - 7 cm. A humus layer of 1 - 1.5 cm is introduced into the grooves, abundantly watered, and then the seedlings are laid out. The roots of the seedlings are leveled and pressed in the side of the grooves or sprinkled with earth, then slightly compact it. The distance between the grooves is 20 - 25 cm, between the plants in a row - 5 - 7 cm, the depth of planting is 3 - 4 cm. The care of seedlings is the same as with the other method of growing onions.
